Halcon 2014 Esquisto
Dedicated to the purest expression of Rhône varietals from an extreamly cool and rocky moutiantop vineyard.
This wine offers a Rhone - like bouquet of black raspberry, leather and peppery spice. Possessing good overall freshness and a rounded, supple feel, this medium - bodied, easygoing, yet balanced effort should drink nicely on release and evolve gracefully through 2023.
235 cases bottled unfined, unfiltered.
When considering the early budbreak and flowering, this gave us the longest hang - time ever for these varietals. The drought conditions resulted in very small, thickly skinned berries and low cluster weights. The 2014 Esquisto is a co - ferment of two third s Grenache and one third Mourvedre, and then we blended in 5% Syrah prior to bottling. For the first time we included 30% whole - cluster. As for all previous vintages, we utilized neutral 500L French oak puncheons for aging and native (feral) yeasts. Lots of cru nchy Grenache red fruit, the Mourvedre provides the funk and pepper y spice , and that splash of Syrah brings an earthy darkness. This blend matches t he 2012 Esquisto but with a little more punch (14.4% vs 14.1%), structure (the whole - cluster) and depth. A cl ean ver sion of an old - school Chateauneuf du Pape.
Driven by a love of the ethereal wines of the Northern Rhnone and impressed by the cool climate characteristics of wines emanating from Mendocino, the folks at Halcon searched the Anderson Valley area for a plot of land that could generate truly world-class wine from Rhone varietals. Having found such a site, they set out to plant a vineyard without compromise.
