Vignobles Mayard 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape - Cuvee
A beautiful effort that's dedicated to the importer Robert Kacher's son Alex, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Alex, a blend of Grenache and Mourvedre, offers beautiful aromatics of black cherry, new leather, licorice and hints of vanilla-laced spice. This flows to a medium to full-bodied, rich, layered and beautifully fruited Châteauneuf du Pape that has a supple, balanced profile, good concentration and plenty of length. It's an outstanding bottle of wine that can be consumed anytime over the coming 7-8 years.
Vignobles Mayard is nestled in the heart of the prestigious village of Châteauneuf du Pape. It is currently managed by Françoise, Béatrice and Didier Mayard. The vineyard covers 43 hectares of vines that include two large plots: a 21-hectare area situated south of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation and an 8-hectare area located to the east. The entire estate covers around thirty parcels of land spread across highly diverse terroirs, some of them planted over a century ago.

Blend: 70% Grenache / 15% Syrah / 10% Mourvedre / 5% Cinsault Ripeness determines the order that grape varieties are picked in, which is why different varieties of grape are often vinified separately. After being fully de-stemmed, the grapes are then gravity-fed into 10,000 liter cement vats where they are immediately cooled. During the fermentation period, each concrete vat is mechanically stirred once or twice daily. Pumping over occurs and heating elements are used to ensure that the wine is kept at a temperature between 25 and 30°. Wines are left to macerate for 20 to 40 days. This is a blend of 3 cuvées: 50% Père Pape, 25 % La Crau de ma Mère, and 25% Clos du Calvaire. Père Pape is primarily a product of the appellation's southern terroirs at Grand Coulet. La Crau de Ma Mère is created from a selection of very old vines located at La Crau, in the north east of the appellation, and is included in the Grenache Conservatory. It is one of the parcels planted just after the phylloxera epidemic in 1866 and belonged to the paternal grandmother, Marie-Louise Mayard, of the current proprietors. Their father named the parcel “la Crau de ma Mère”, a tribute to his mother. Clos du Calvaire is a wine created by Marie Louise and Alphonse Mayard, and is a blend from various terroirs of the appellation. Clos du Calvaire is unpretentious—a pure expression of a true Châteauneuf du Pape.
